The reason for this is because Honda got most of it right the first time, there is more to fix on the yfz. Decompression plug ring a bell to anyone?

I really don't think the YFZ has much to fear from Honda. In typical red fashion, the 450R will stay basically the same, while Yammie seems committed to improving thier 450.

RBR, do a little search on yfz engine failures, you'll find exponentially more than the 450R. I was being nice and not bringing up the big stuff. The point of the matter is that yamaha doesnt do as good of a job testing machines and they have the reliability to show for it. Honda has had some problems with the R, but a much smaller percentage of the production run than the 04 yfz.

Keep in mind though, there are more YFZ's out there, and more of these engines have hard use on them. Also, I see a ton of YFZ's that are set up to and have been raced. Most of the 450r's I see have been purchased for recreational/trail use and are not seeing the same mount of abuse. The market was so hungry for a true production race bike, looks like a ton of racers bought the first runs of Yamahas up. Those bikes have been put through the paces. Honda made a quad with a softer edge. That is fine, but the people who are purchasing them are less likely to abuse their purchase. At least those are my observations. I think even if someone could provide HARD numbers as to the number of engine failures, AND if the YFZ had more engine failures per say, 1000 units, there may be an underlying reason besides poor manufacturing/engineering quality.

For all who think that the yamaha will out last the Honda. Check out the last ATV Rider mag. They had a 12 hour endurance test and the Honda came in 1st the yamaha last!!
If it does not have a wing, it's not worth owning.

Read that article. Two things, I agree that the rear shock can be a killer. Pretty sure I wouldn't want to ride mine 12 hours straight. The stiff suspension was a liability in that situation. Second, and most importantly, the only mechanical malfunctions could have been prevented by a $70.00 swingarm skidplate(first upgrade I have bought for any quad I have ever owned.) Hmmm, I don't recall any engine problems. Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of the 450R, but at my advanced age, life is to short to ride homely quads w/o e start.
