For short drags, I'd run the 12 with the 42 and launch w/2nd pinned. It's hard to train yourself to dump the clutch with the rev limiter pinging but unless you sit too far back, your rear tires will spin enough to keep you from flipping over backwards. Once the quad is moving, slide your butt backwards to add traction. If it starts to stand up on you, either pull in the clutch, lean forward, or tap the rear brake. When shifting, don't pull the clutch all the way in, just slap it but don't leave off the throttle. You may shift once more than the guy beside you but you'll be getting max torque multiplication with the steeper gears. 1/8 mile drag cars run 4.56 to 5.12 rear end gearing, same concept applies to quads.

gear calculator

check this link out for all your tire and gear combos.

also primary drive brand front sprockets from rockymountain atv are cheap.7 dollars a piece you could buy a 12 and 14 tooth and see what you like better.i went with the 12 tooth myself and i like it alot better than stock gearing

Cool, you guys have given me a bunch to consider. I think im going to buy a bunch of gears and try diffrent setups. Would anyone recommend I change front and rear at the same time or just one thing at a time?

BURKEDADDY---- thanks for the gear/speed ratio post. Helpful!

no problem
change the front untill you get it where you want it, then you could fine tune it with the rear sprocket.i havent found a rear sprocket for the raptor that has less than 40 teeth so any change in the rear will result in more bottom end.let us know how it works out.
have fun

i would change the frunt it is cheeper then if needed go 2 up in the rear and go from there.if you buy a bunch it will be a bunch of $$$$ look on Ebay but remember there is shipping. the frunt is about $13 at a shop and rears are about $45 to $75 at a shop

Hi..i have a 04 raptor with a full yosh system, pro design k&n kit with no air box lid, and dynojet jets. i ride mostly big sand dunes and sometimes dirt trails and hardley see 6th gear. i basically want to haul butt up a sand dune in a race. do u guys recommend a 12 teeth sprocket in front for this? i do not want to get pistons, cams., etc right now maybe later..just want a quick pick me up for the big dune hills..thks
