Default 12 tooth or 42 tooth

I'm looking for my Raptor to launch better and rev faster for short drag races on flat land. Someone told me to go with a 12 tooth and another guy told me to go with a 42 in the rear b/c it would be easier on my chain.

Is a 12 tooth from and a 42 tooth rear the same, which should I change?

the 12 tooth equals going up 3 in the rear....Great for hill climbing and short bursts of power but I would always suggest changing the rear sprocket 1 tooth at a time until you find the combo you like.

Hello tecc77. The reasion he said that it is easier on the chain is that with a smaller front sprocket, the chain is in higher tension for a given amount of torque.
I hope this helps.

There is no clear cut answer to your question and ItalianStallion is correct with 1 tooth can change everything. But another thing to consider is the combos. Like 12/42 and 13/45 are the same so called teeth difference, but will perform different. Best way is by the seat of your pants testing to get what you want.

Stock engine, in that TN dirt, go up 1 tooth up front and you will be quicker. Your engine does not need to rev quicker, you need to use the torque thats available. Find a buddy to run you now as a constant, then make the change and run him again. You will be pulling out in first gear.

I remember going to a 12 tooth on my 95' warrior and it really help lessen my shifting around 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

So do you guys recommened I change the rear or the front sprocket. Our drag race area is short, less than 1/8th of a mile I think. I figured a 12 tooth would help out on that drag race. Hmmm

Alot of people don't realize how much top speed you loose by droping teeth in the front. It really shortens up your gears alot.

Very little top end (if any) will be lost. The engine will be able to rev farther with the 12 tooth front sprocket, thus gaining any potential lost top speed. The stock engine still cannot bump the rev limiter with a 12 tooth only change. For dragging on dirt, more gear (14 tooth) allows the stock engine to accelerate quicker, even though it's not revving quicker. Been there and done that....are you guys with me here? Or do you really think just because you have lower gearing you can accelerate faster? Some cases you can, but not with a stock Rap engine.

I dropped to a 12 and couldn't stand it. The gears were way to short. I found myself cruzin along in 5th and 6th gear wayy to often.
