I hear everyone mention that they want to swap out the counter-sprocket for a 12 tooth one.

I ride about 90% of the time in sand dunes and I would prefer a mid-high end power band on my Raptor. With this in mind what type of gearing should I set it up with?

I believe the gearing you pick also has a lot to do with what other mods you are going to make to it such as the intake restrictions, air filter/box, exhaust, etc.

If you are going to leave it completely stock, then I would think you would want to drop down to a 12 tooth or perhaps even an 11.

If you are going to do the engine mods to get the power up, then the gearing would probably be ok.

Get the power up enough, I bet the raptor could break 100 mph on flat ground with stock gearing.

Anyone considering going to a 11 tooth sprocket should give up the idea. I put on my 12 tooth last night and a ride down the street tells me that I lost significant top speed. An 11 tooth would wrap out at about 45-50 mph. I'm going to the dunes tomorrow to try out the 12 tooth. I'll report back.

An 11T front sprocket is an awfully tight circle to be wrapping the chain around.

Maybe a combination of a little smaller front and larger rear would be more wise...

The 12 tooth sprocket should bring top speed down to approximately 66.5 mph. The 11 tooth sprocket should bring top speed down to approximately 60.9 mph. Actual results may be slightly faster (+1 to +3 mph) with the smaller sprockets due to the lighter load last gear is pulling. These figures are calculated based on 72 mph top speed with original sprocket in last gear.

I just put a 12 sprocket on mine and would be very surprised if I lost any top speed. The machine does rev more and seems to pick up speed in 5th gear now. From what I observe...37 horsepower apparantly is'nt enough horsepower to pull the stock "salt-flat" gearing.

I don't have a GPS unit, so who is going to volunteer to run a 12 tooth sproket on top end to see if it either slows down, or just revs harder and maintains the stock top end?
