I had a yz250wr for many years and loved the bike... didnt really want to sell it but did to compensate for the warriors cost. there were extreemly few quads that could keep up with my bike, granted it was moded. If you want ungoldly fast stick with a yz490 if you can get your hands on one... that bike is sick. however, if you are limited to the above mentioned, stick with the 2-stroke yz. better throttle responce and quicker powerband. Probably go for the banshee next but remember, twice the rebuild costs.... twice the pistons. Acording the yamaha guy down the street, even the yzfs need rebuilds every so many hours (not sure the exact amount) so all that being said... the two-stroke zy is cheaper, easier to rebuild, and is faster hands down.

Like most of you said. Unless you're going to run like a half mile or so race the quad is never going to catch up to the bike.
And if you twitch the back sprocket down a couple teeth you'll never catch the bike and it will keep walking away from you like you're standing still
I know this first hand from my older CR250 which has a smaller rear sprocket.

I wanted to thank everyone for their input. I bought a 2005 YZ 250 today, and just got back from riding part of a desert race course in northwest Arizona. OMG, OMG, OMG, this YZ 250 is one sweet ride? Yamaha nailed it dead on in the handling department with the new aluminum frame for 2005. I cannot believe how perfectly this YZ will carve a turn, and how balanced it feels riding over big sand whoops in fourth gear. The suspension feels as good as the handling. My son went with me on todays ride, and brought his YFZ 450. After 30 miles of break-in time we did a single drag race, and you guys were right, ... no contest . We switched rides for the last few miles, and as I was tooling along a graded gravel road on the YFZ, in fifth gear at about half throttle, my son wheelied past me on my YZ 250. That had to be a 4th gear wheelie, which impressed me, but I just about crapped my pants because I thought for sure my son was going to wad up my new bike .
Anyway, thanks again. I am very happy with the new YZ, and it is everything I was hoping for.

Those old open class two stroke bikes were scary fast, thats for sure. I owned a YZ 465 the year before the YZ 490 came out, and then switched to Honda, and owned CR 500s for ten years before getting out of desert racing. The new bikes are not that much faster than the bikes were 20 years ago, if you are comparing 250cc to 250cc, or open class to open class, but what really surprised me was the suspension and handling. That is what the manufacturers have been working on for the past 20 years. Five minutes into yesterdays ride and I had already been amazed at how good the handling was on the new YZ. It handles about a hundred times better than the old open class MXer's did. My first thought yesterday was that I had not realized I was such a good rider, LOL. Only thing is, I'm not that good of a rider at all, ... its the BIKE.
