fire shootin out my pipe
#1
whats up people look heres the deal i just bought an 87 warrior off a friend of mine and im havin a little problem with it. when im in sixth gear wide open this thing just backfires and sends 2 foot flames shooting outta my pipe. what could be causing this. and has anybody had a similar problem?

Warriors are very bad about their valves getting overtight. Check the valves, particularly the exhausts, for gap. If the exhausts are too tight, they could be allowing some of the combustion through the pipe.

i was also thinking it was too lean but the plug is black. and even if it is i cant find a jet kit for an 87 warrior anywhere. so what would i do about enrichening the mixture more. i know the stock neddle has 5 different slots to place the little e clip should i move that down towards the point one notch os is that no good at all?

u don't need a whoel jet kit.. jsut the main.. mostly.. just go to any yamaha dealer and they can hook ya up... also black.. means rich.. which will shoot flames also.. so lean it out a bit.. the plug should be TAN NOT BLACK!!

Black is an indication of a rich condition and if you say flames id say ur igniting that extra fuel in your pipe and thats where its coming from... Although if its running THAT rich I dont see how the hell it would be running to well...

There is no way that that bike would be able to run well on a mixture that would have enough extra fuel to ignite after exhuasting. I would be willing to bet money that the exhaust valves on that bike have a zero gap. Seen it before on my old warrior. They need the valves adjusted about every fourth oil change.
