Default K & N Air Filters

I have heard different things and I hope I don't come out looking stupid. I bought and installed a K&N air filter and it says you have to use their spray oil on the filter and I figured this was a sales gimic just to buy more of their product like alot of companies do.So I used WD40 instead, this is my question,is this ok,is it good, bad what options do I have?

I don't think WD40 is a very good idea.

the spary they give you cleans the air filter and lets air through while seposedly stopping micro dust and dirt particles. WD 40 just basicly blocks the air flow more..

Only use approved paper filter oil. You are gonna have to replace a piston if you don't.

If I were you I would clean the filter immediately and hope that WD40 has not ruined it. The oil they are suggesting is tacky and makes the filter work by helping to catch dirt and dust particles. They sell a kit for cleaning and oiling the filter, it is not very expensive and will last for a few cleanings and reoilings.

DKNARD is right, the filter oil used by K&N is specially designed for use on a cotton guaze filter. Do not use foam filter oil , or any other kind of oil that isn't approved for cotton guaze air filters . You can buy the K&N filter recharge kits at any automotive store. You need to pick one up and see if the cleaner solution included in the kit will be able to cut through the WD40. If you can't get it completely out, it will interfere with the K&N oil adhering to the cotton and you will have to buy a new filter.

elw38,

I think you mean cotton guaze filter oil, paper filters don't use oil.

I tried their gimmicky filter oil for a year or so... Now I just use regular ol' napa 10-40.
I've never had a problem.
