slow 05 grizz?
#1
I've only had my grizz for a few weeks. Put 26" mudlites on day after I brought it home. Weenie rode it for 10 hours like dealer recommended. Opened er up this weekend to see what it would do on a flat, dry, well beaten down corn field. Can only get it to 50mph, no more. I can't try it on the road because I have a wierd-o neighbor itching to call the cops on me AGAIN if a single tire touches the pavement. I first thought the 1" bigger tires must be the reason but saw a post from a while back using "search" that had an identicle setup with a top speed well over 60mph. I checked the plug, light brown tip and insulater with black deposits on metal base of plug that surrounds insulater. Checked float setting with clear plastic tube method and height is at about 5/16" above top of bowl. Does this sound normal or definatly not dialed in right? I have a full service/warranty contract with dealer and I'll just have them correct it on first service if anyone can help me diagnose problem,if there even is one. Thanks for your time and please let me know if you have any thoughts.

I know we have all gone back and forth on this issue lots, but I broke mine in like I stole it and it has always ran great. Maybe the tires and the "weenie" riding it could of had something to do with it. HAHAHA I just re-read that and it looks like I am calling kawzuki a weenie. ahhaha. That's not what I meant. I meant the way you broke it in.

Do you feel it hitting the rev limiter?
Any drivabity problems...missing or bogging? If not, the jetting is probably ok.
It could be the tires, especially if they weigh alot more than the stock ones do,and if they have big lugs, that hurts top speed too.
For what its worth...it really doesnt matter how a motor is broke in...as long as it doesnt overheat or do prolonged idling, in the first 10 hours, itll be ok.

I completely agree. It really doesn't matter. There are several posts on here about breaking in and such. I just couldn't stand "weenie" driving it for ten whole hours. I am a bit of a kid when it comes to that.

the plug sounds good. it is common knowladge that yamaha does not adjust the floats on the grizzly. i would have them adjusted. also, bigger tires will screw with the speedo. it should still be showing around 57 to 59 mph though. it will offer more power as she breaks in though. do your service, and have the valves adjusted, along with the floats. if none of that works, then turn out the screw in the throttle unit 1 turn, and see if that helps. it sounds funny, but when my brother did it, he outran me on mine, lmao!

UPDATE! I just put stock rims and tires back on,I can't believe the difference. I can wheelie now! Got it up to 62 in the field, said heck with the neighbor and pinned it down the road for about a mile. Got it up to 67mph. Felt like I just pipe and jetted! Thanks for all the replies. I guess I shouldn't believe everything I read on the forums.( old post that said 26" mudlites do not effect top speed or performance)
As far as the float setting goes, does anybody have a service manual that can tell me the measurment? It would be easier to make the dealer do it for me if I knew for a fact it is off just a tad.
Thanks again guys!

Something don't sound right. I can't beleive that the tires made that bit of a diff. I got 27's on mine, yeah it bogs it down a little but don't affect top speed. If anything it made it faster, after all the taller tire the faster it will go....as long as the power is there. I can cruise with my moms Grizz(yeah thats right my moms)and peg mine and it will slowly creep ahead, and it has 25's. I would stick with the 26's and get a jet kit and the clutch kit. ...........Ah hell, put 29.5 on it
