If it is stamped a 2001 then it is a 2001 no matter the build date, it's still a good deal
anyway, I replaced my tranny 2 times and after the second time I never used reverse gear because that is the problem,
The reverse gear is to large a ratio for the strength of the gear itself and how it rides in your tranny.
Simply never use reverse and you should not have any troubles,or replace it with the 2002 update.
I have been going on 3 years now and no troubles with my tranny again.

if you don't have any airbox mods, I would probably try 145/150, 150/155 since you have the stock filter.
or buy a dynojet kit and follow the instructions. probably 144/146 with the new needle clip position on 3.
also try a search on here.
oh yeah, go to CT racings website and look at the pipe shootout, there will be some recommendations for each pipe and airbox mods.

if any machine sits for 2 years the gas is bad, it probably started to turn to varnish already.clean those carbs and boots up and you should have that "not running without the choke" problem fixed, You sound like you have a clue as to what you are doing so it should be simple enough for you, the first time you take the carbs off it will take you a good 2 hours but once you do it, it should get easier to do.
