Does anybody know if the '01 Kodiak has the same problem with the rear brakes wearing out as the 2000 model has, or has Yamaha resolved that problem?

I'm getting ready to change my rear brakes on my 01 Kodiak. Not very used mileage wise but I do have Gateway Outlaws on there. Might be causing excessive pressure on the rear brakes. But I try to use my fronts as much as possible.

They did not change anything in 01.In 02 they put a shield over it.It is to keep mud and debris off the disc. They wear prematurely because mud and dirt gets on the rotor and it basically becomes a lathe.I can only get about 120 miles out of my rears and they are toast.Thats even trying to stay off them.I would be curious to know if anyone with the 02 that has the shield has seen a diff in pad life. Also,I have not been able to find severe duty pads for the rear either.Just the sintered metal.
As far as changing them they are easy.

I have an 02 Kodiak with approximately 2000km. I still have the original rear pads. I checked them out the other day and they don't seem to be that worn out (Yet). Or atleast they're not squeeling yet. Maybe that guard works pretty well. I been in sand, mud and trail riding situations.

Ive got a 2000 and my best bud's got the new black 02 with carbon. We change at the exact same time, about once every 2 weekends.

Its sick how crappy the brakes are on yamaha work bikes. My 1996 kodiak wore out the shoes in 500, my Grissly is once a month, my kodiak is once every 2 weekends. And the worst part is how weak they are, you can hardly lock up the tires.

My quest breaks have a brembo rotor and claiper and the pads are still good at 3000.00.

Hey Mar,

I checked my brakes the other day and there still fine after 700km.(434 miles), My friend has a 2000 Kodiak and had the same problem. He switched to a harder pad the "sintered pad" $47.00 can. from EBC which is available here in Canada. Also they make a "severe pad " $53.00 which I hear is also a good pad. He has less problems now with his brakes.
Some brake pad companies carry sintered, severe and also kevlar pads which are longer lasting and cost more.
Check this Canadian ATV site they are located in Quebec and they have an online 2003 ATV cateloge which you can access. I ordered a passenger seat with a cargo carrier through a local ATV dealer.
