Default Oil Filter

Have a simple question hope someone can answer. On my son's Kodiak 400 I just purchased, I want to change engine oil and filter. Someone told me that on these engines you just "clean" the oil filter and reuse. I know on my Honda I always install a new filter at change time. I dont have a manual yet so maybe someone has some experience with this. Thanks

Oil filters are expensive.. but for long term riding and u want a safe reliable.. deffinately change the filter every time... every 20 - 25 hours usually.. if you dont have time and you are only riding for a couple hours after a change.. it might be okay but make sure u change it quickly after that.

Using old oilfilters.. some debree (steel , or aluminum shavings from your case/ gears) may be stuck in the filter. if they free up they may infect your tranny , or clutch. and having to deal with replacing a clutch or trans is much more of a hassle than just changing your oil filter!

What year is the kodiak? The newer ones have throw away filters, and a screen in the sump which just needs cleaning now and then.

Its a 1994 Kodiak 400. I have since priced an oil filter and they said $10 which is a bit higher than for my Honda but I think changing each oil change is the safe way to go.

crossover
According to this chart, the fram ch6005, wix24936, and the purolator ml16805 will work as well as the yami filter, and probably be much cheaper.
