I believe the only difference is a new speedometer and tripmeter, other than that its the same quad which is still one of the best quads in its class.

The Canadian ultramatics had speedos and tripometers to begin with. The US models started in 2001 with them.

And I haven't looked for myself yet but I did notice on the Yamaha site they have the 2001 Kodiaks spec'd with 2 more inches of clearance than the 2000 models. The 2000 have just under 8 inches(and I have measured mine to verify), and the 2001 models are just under 10 inches, but I don't own a 2001 so I haven't measured for myself.

Maybe someone could measure under the diff of their 2001 model and let us know.

I didnt know that 2000 Canadian Kodiaks came with speedos and tripmeters. Wish mine did too, but here in the states that feature was added for the 2001's.

I have a 2000 Kodiak and installed the Yamaha accessory hour meter/tach. It costs about 40 bucks and I installed it on top of the plastic handlebar bolt cover in just a few minutes. When the engine is running, it shows the engine RPMs and when the engine is turned off, it shows total elapsed hours on the machine. I found this device to be very useful for maintenance events. It also showed me that the rear brake pads lasted only 20 hours.

I don't think there is an ACTUAL difference in clearance. They look exactly the same to me other than the speedo, which looks like an add on.

20 hours! Isn't that pitiful for what otherwise seems to be a great machine. I'm looking to buy a 2001 Kodiak but I'm hesitant until I hear that Yamaha engineers have fixed the problem
