Yamaha Bruin valve adjustmet "How To"

Hello all,
4 all you tightwads out there (like myself) who are appalled at the FACT that your new bruin will need a valve adjustment after the first 20 hours
i offer without any warrany this little step by step on how to adjust the valves on you new bruin. I think it is a bum rap when Yamaha wants to stick you for a 60 dollar manual or a dealer wants to stick you for 200 bucks to do the adjustment on a machine that is nearly brand new. Anyhow this worked for me. If you screw yours up then u should have gone to someone who knows what the were doing :-;.
THE ENGINE MUST BE COLD.
1 Pull the front fender. careful with those headlight wires under the hood.
2. Pull the tank cover. Turn the gas valve off and remove the valve **** (phillips screw in center of ****).
3. Disconnect the gas line and pull the gas tank and rubber membrane aroud the snorkel. Pull the spark plug.
4 Pull the pull starter by removing the 4 screws that hold it in place. These screws were installed with the locktite from hell. U can heat them if u wish but
i just broke them loose and ran them back and forth until they came out. Make sure to apply locktite blue when re installing them. Someday u will
be back.
5. Look at the spark plug hole. The cover under the gas tank on the left is the intake valve. remove the 3 allen screws. The cover on the front of the
head on the right, (near the exaust port) is the exaust valve. remove the 3 allen screws.
6. Look at the pull start (where it was). U will see a round plastic plug with a slot for a wide flathaed screwdriver. Pull it out.
7. Get a flashlight and look in the plug hole while u turn the motor with a wrench on the big bolthead in the center of the pull starter. Turn it counter
clockwise. I used a ratchet for this because u will want to spin the motor a few times to figure out wtf u are doing with the valves going up and down.
U will see a groove cut laterally in the threads of the plug hole. This is your reference mark. As u spin u will see in the hole a horizontal mark. Align it
with the reference mark and ensure both valves are in the up position. U can now slide your guage on each valve and measure where they are at.
DO NOT ADJUST JUST SEE WHERE THEY ARE AT!!!
8. Look on the cover for the breather and u wiil see a sticker for the correct valve settings for the 350 bruin 4x4. If it is in tolerance then u did all
this work for nuthin <BFG> If the guage shows way off tolerance STOP! Repeat step 6 and make sure marks are correctly aligned and both valves are
raised. U should't be off more than a couple of thousands of an inch on either valve.
9 Adjust to firm clearance on the feeler guage loosening the nut on top of the adjuster. The shaft has a square end to adjust. You can turn it with your
fingers to adjust but i held it in place with a very small cresent while thightening the jam nut.
10 Now repeat step 6 until u are sure u have each valve set properly, Re assemble in reverse order and hope for the best.
U will need metric allen wrenches, metric sockets, metiric combo wrenches and a good feeler guage to do this job. If adjusting brakes is a challenge 4 u then do not do this yourself. Leave it alone or pay someone. I recommend a metric feeler guage but i set mine with a 5 dollar autozone special. (.003" in, .007" ex) I probably screwed somthing up here but i'm sure someone will correct me (as usual). Remember, To err is human. To blame it on someone else is even more human.

The 20 hours was just up on my 2005 Bruin and I performed the valve adjustment this weekend. Fairly simple procedure, just one question though: The flywheel shows three horizontal marks. It's not like the $60 manual shows either. I'm guessing you align the middle mark; the first one is 5 degrees retarded, middle should be TDC and the last would be 5 degrees advanced (????). Any clarification would be appreciated.
