Is there a cotter key in the end of the stem? Is it in? Are the splines on the stem rounded off or loose? Were any of these parts damaged or did it just come loose?

Assuming that everything is intact and working as it should, perhaps a steering damper modified to fit your bike would be an option.

yes there is a cotter pin i had pulled that off and tightened the nut put pin back in and it seemed ok till the nit backs down a little and steering gets a little loose again. i plowed this yr snow. and didnt notice any probs. when i was trail riding good trails i can jump or hot dog around because i had broke my neck a few yrs ago and have had 2 surgerys on it have a couple plates in my neck so i ride slow and mostley good trails like pipe lines and that . so yes it just got loose. what do you mean by splines on the stem? is this at the nut end were key is? thank you for your response

You should be able to torque the nut and put the cotter key in tight so that the nut cannot back down. I would also try some loctite on the nut, the type that comes off, and see how it works.

By splines I mean at the nut and cotter key end of the stem. Is there a pittman arm on the end of the stem that slides up onto splines? If so, are these splines chewed up at all? Perhaps a tie rod or end is bent and is straining the pittman arm and causing it to pull down on the nut? I have never looked at the front end of my 4wd quads to see how the steering works, but I'm assuming its similar to that on a 2wd sport quad.

i just looked at it there is a plate that the tie rods bolt to and that plate the steering stem goes through and nut on the bottom with cotter key.

Ok. Does that plate move at all when its all bolted up? If it has play in it that can cause sloppy handling.

if the nut is tight no play. seems like from riding the nut will vibrate back to cotter key , when i tighten up nut there is like 1-2 threads above hole for cotter key. so it will vibrate itself back to key and seeing as how key keeps nut from comin off it gets play in it . now do i have to replace nut maybe didnt notice if it was nylon lock nut or not but maybe it is worn.?

I would throw a washer in between the pittman arm and nut, then the cotter key should be stuck right in the castle nut.
