Grizzly fan/temp light question

Grizzly fan/temp light question
My buddy has a 1999 600(air cooled). He says the fan never comes on. He believes the fan will only come
on if the temp light comes on. Is this correct? Should the fan not normally run to cool the
engine before the temp light goes on? Thanks.
