RAPTOR OWNERS...USE A BREATHER FILTER!
#11
There was another thread along these lines earlier this month. I don't think it is a catastrophic deal if a breather filter is not installed - but it is cheap prevention. If you can feel a pulse when the engine runs (I haven't checked mine yet), then some sort of filter is probably a good idea. It may be that the cylinder is soo big for the dry-sump engine (lower volume than wet sumps) that the situation is a little different from the Warrior, etc...

I put a breather filter on my raptor as follows: Parts needed - Refillable fuel filter (performance type), breather filter replacement foam, 3/8" rubber hose, hose clamps. I went to auto zone and bought a chrome refillable fuel filter. I pulled out the bronze fuel filter material from the chrome filter and inserted some breather filter material (I used foam material from Auto Zone but the white material will work also). I heated some of the 3/8" hose (to stretch it out) and placed it over the "L" shaped fitting that goes into the breather. The other end of the 3/8" hose goes over the nipple on the chrome fuel filter. The hose coming from the crankcase goes over the nipple on the other side of the fuel filter and needs to be clamped since it has a slightly larger inner diameter. The procedure takes about 20 minutes.

This is the same setup as the Warrior. I spent four days at Little Sahara in Waynoka and had no problem with the breather hose. And this is after spending several hours with guys with paddles throwing up all kinds of roost!
The only problem I had was a little sand in the idle speed pod. I took off the plate and sprayed some cleaner in it and it was back to normal.
I'm not saying it's a bad idea to put a breather filter on the tube but it's not as crucial as many would think.

This is a crock of s@#t.Do you really think Yamaha would let somthing like this happen to all of these machines?Do you think they want to warrenty engines??Is knobby a dumb Yamaha engineer? No,No,No and NOOOO.The system works like an automotive pvc system venting the motor into the air cleaner where it is all recycled again.Im not sure who started this whole thing but it sounds pretty bogus to me.Im no expert but thats my $2.00 worth.Does anyone agree with me here???

Has anyone thought of routing the breather tube up to the air box?
You could drill a small hole and mount a bulkhead fitting with some sealer, then clamp the breather hose to the fitting and attach a filter to the other side. That would help keep the filter dry. I can see a problem using a paper type filter in an exposed location, if it gets wet it will act like a stopper, causing crankcase pressure to build. Positive crankcase pressure will cause plug fouling , oil burning and other problems.
Just a thought.
