Default got a little problem

i bought an 04 raptor660 a few weeks ago from a private seller. its got alien pipes, k&n filter, and its been re-jetted. and its been working fine up until last night. i went to washington last week so its just been sitting in my garage for a week. but it starts right up and runs for a few seconds and then starts to sputter and then craps out and it won't start again. when i try to restart it the engine is turning over but never fires up. and im not any type of mechanic so i have no clue. and does the carb need to be rejetted again since im at a higher elevation? i bought it from a guy in phoenix (1500ft) and i live at an elevation of 5500ft? just wondering. anyways any ideas would be appreciated

Welcome to the forums.
Is it running out of gas? Have you tried reserve position?

well for optimal performance you should rejet for that elevation difference, but it shouldnt stop your engine from running. it does sound like your running out of gas.

could be. you have to do three basic tests. an engine needs three things to run. spark: test for spark by removing the spark plug, place the plug into the wire boot. then ground the plug threads against the cylinder area, if you have to hold it there use insulated pliars. turn the motor over you should have bright blus spark. it needs compresion: you can get testers for them but if it ran strong before it wouldnt start i bet it has good compresion. and yes the last thing is fuel. check your fuel line and filter, then your carbs. sometimes you can get away with just spraying the carb cleaner into the carb while its on the bike but i suggest you remove the carbs and pull off the bowl. then pull out the jets and make sure everything is clean. after doing all this your bike should run

hope this helps

install new spark plug and then try this procedure in order:
1. make sure parking brake not engaged
2. place choke lever on handlebar fully open
3. move the throttle lever from fully closed to fully open a few times (till it hits the stops)
4. start the engine without moving the throttle
you would be running rich if it was not rejetted correctly but it should still start with a fresh unfouled plug.
good luck

well i haven't had a whole lot of time to look at it. but i did find one thing intresting....is that when i tipped the quad up on its end and let the gas run out of the carb (which came out into the air filter box) it seemed to start and run pretty good for a minute or two. then it started to sputter and died again. so maybe the engine is getting flooded. is there a screw or some way to adjust how much fuel enters the carb or engine? thanks for the tips

ok...i finally looked at it again and the spark plug is fine. theres just no gas getting to the engine. the gas gets from the tank to the carb just fine but it doesn't go anywhere after the carb! i tried to clean it out a little but still didn't work. and i don't want to screw up my bike by doing my own "repair session". so should i just take it to a mechanic or do you guys have any more good ideas?
