Air box filled with gas!!

I have a '95 Kodiak 400 and was taking the lid off the air box to clean the filter because it didn't seem to be running very good. When I opened the box there was gas OVER the air filter. What would cause this type of thing, what can i do about it. Any suggestions are appreciated.
