I know this is a problem with most grizzes, has anyone had any luck with anything?

 

Yes, I am having the same problem. I get into water and BOOM...sputter! Mine won't start for several minutes. Any solutions?

 

What is happening is your getting steam into your air intake because of were the air intake is on the grizzlys. I have heard of guys changing were there intake is or you can go real slow into the water giving your engine time to cool as your going in.

 

i got one of the first 2005 grizzlys in my area,(late May 2004)

so ive had it over a year,and i am constantly running through deep water ,and mud

and can honostly only recall one instance where i had an issue running it through water,and it wasnt an engine issue,,,

i had gotton water in the belt primary through the primary cover intake ,and the drive belt was slipping,and i still was able to nurse it out

i have never had the issue you guys are speaking of

 

i drilled 2 holes in the black plastic below the gas tank...figuring that the steam would go out that way...well some of it does and the spuddering still happens....so where can you relocate the intake?.....drilling holes in the blue plastic below the tank...and the sadle?...i don't want to start drilling anymore then i have to......

 

the only time i have water issues is after i pressure wash the bike after mudding,,,,i let it sit for about 15 minutes,,,starts right up

i dont know why you need to be drilling holes everywhere

 

Venting between the exhaust and the intake will not solve the problem...to prove this, take your seat off and let the Grizz heat up, then spray some water on the hot exhause pipe. You will not be able to vent that much steam by drilling a couple holes.

My best advice is to drive through water slower or build a snorkel that goes above the gas tank. I have seen a couple done, and if done right, they are hardly noticible.

 

if you snorkle the air box,does that increase drag on the air intake?

 

You will get a LOT more air into the engine if you make a snorkel. This would require some rejetting.

 

I thought that yamaha, took care of this issue back in 03.

You could try the various heat wraps, on the exaust pipe, this should help to keep the steaming down, because the outside of the heat wrap,is insulated from the hot pipe, and water splashing on the wrap shouldnt steam. You could try removing the side panels, this will alow the steam to escape easier, it wont look as pretty, but should run much better.

Also make sure its not a spark issue...pull off the spark plug wire, and put some dielectric grease on the porcelene of the spark plug, and reinstall the spark plug wire. This will stop any shorting that may be happening, when the spark plug gets water on it.
