After all they are going to have to make something that has been known as "2 smokes" for years run clean. What are we going to call them then? LOL

Certain US Universities have been having contests for years to build "clean running" 2 strokes, and some great success has been achieved.
They have the potential to run cleaner than a thumper...

I love the thought of having REAL power being produced again.... Hats off to BRP because all the other MFGs (Yammiehaw and Honduh especially) have ran the other way.

I know, I can wait I hear another 6 months or so
THey have been saying the same thing about their snowmobiles. I think it is all hype.
A 4-stroke doesn't burn any oil, a 2-stroke needs to burn the oil. How can a 2-stroke be clean burning???
Don't kidd yourself that a 4 stroke doesn't burn any oil... and it's not necessarily the oil burning that produces all the bad stufff..... It's more of the unburned (raw) fuel that's the problem.

hype or not, it's been done!

Hay guys a 2 stroke can be a cleaner burning engine and pass emmissions. General Motors, locomotive division EMD has been useing a 2 stroke diesel for almost 70 years, and the current example is the 16-710G3, this motor puts out 4500HP. In 2004 they changed a few things on the motor so it would be able to pass emmissions for years to come. Hay it may be a diesel but it still is a 2 stroke engine. I have a Warrior but I do not want to see the 2 strokes dissappear. As far as polluting the air I don't want to hear about that, just go to any big city at rush hour and tell me how many fume spewing diesel busses are on a main street. I work in Newark NJ, and at rush hour there has to be over 100 busses going down Broad street at one time. If they want to clean the air so much, why don't they put the electric trollies back on the streets. How about eliminating some long haul truck routes for freight trains. One freight car equals two trucks, do the math, 100 car train just two diesels pulling.
I just had to vent.

dune is exactly right. It's the unburned fuel that's the problem.

The oil in the gas is just to lube the top end and should be burned with the normal combustion process. If it's smoking, it's unburnt, or only partially burnt.

Through the use of DI systems on two strokes you can cure that problem.

The thing about the big diesels used in locomotives and shipping is they aren't like the scavaging 2-strokes most people are used to. They include full valvetrains like a 4-stroke. They also spin only a few hundred RPM. The worlds largest shipping diesel only turns something like 110RPMs are full throttle. There's no reduction gears on those. The piston diameter and stroke is best measured in feet. I want to say it's over 1 million cubic inch displacement.

Locomotives are more efficient on fuel as well. And take less people to operate. The problem is they can't move goods around as fast as trucks can. With a train you have to go from the point of origin to the train terminal (though, sometimes there's a terminal on-site) the route through the track system, then offload at a terminal and deliver. They are good for moving cargo that doesn't have a shelf life. Produce doesn't work as well.

The trains are also built so that the engine in the train spins at a constant speed. They can be run at their optimum all the time. Not like a truck that's going to be accelerating and decelerating a lot.

BRP owns the patents to the clean burning two strokes. Orbital and Fitch technology I think are the only clean burning two strokes technologies available today. The snowmobiles use Orbital and the Evinrude E-Tech use Fitch, both are EFI.

It’s coming a completely new hyper performance two stroke sport quad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
