they are going to keep on raising the price, they know when it goes $3-$3.50 a gallon people will still buy it. then they will drop it 5- 10 cents and people will be happier because gas has gone down some. bull sh@#! they know what they are doing and it not just hurting us at the pumps. all your shipping charges are going up,alot of factories us oil products so it's costing them more ( less money = lay offs),people are going to save more buy less. it bad really bad all for some extra money in the oil companys pockets!!!!

Fahq, you seem to have the best understanding of the situation of anyone on all these posts. One thing that I have always wondered is why in a time when gas prices are going through the roof are the oil companies making the most profit?
Is this somehow related or follow the same principle that allowed brokerage firms to make record profits while their managed accounts were declining rapidly in value? I fully understand how the brokerage industry works but I am not sure why the oil industry isn't absorbing some of these price fluctuations.
Any idea?

When I got to work this morning gas was $2.35 pgal, when I drove by the same station 30 min later it was $2.79, then another 30 min later is was $2.99. Isn't it amazing, that gas must get more valuable the longer it stays it that tank under the gas station. LOL. Seriously, isn't it strange that when a 55 gal. barrel of oil goes up $2.69 our gas goes up $0.64 a gallon. Yet when oil goes down $3.00 a barrel, gas only goes down $0.10. Kinda just ticks ya off don't it. Hey at least most of us haven't got it as bad as those poor folks on the coast. Give them a prayer if ya get a chance, or a chant, or whatever you believe in. Makes the price of gas seem not so important right now.

gas prices here (WV) are now 3.09 for regular....that is rediculous....everyone says hey we need to go like two days without buying gas but yet everyone still drives around and therefore had to buy the gas sometime....my opinion is once it gets really bad (not that it ain't already really bad but i am talkin like 4.00 a gallon) the nation will wisen up and not drive for like two days therefore we wont be using gas.....but truthfully i think we should start now before this crazy s**t does get totally out of control.....but hey that is just my opinion.....also if it gets much worse this place (USA) is really gonna go downhill i mean friends robbing friends and family killin family.....all over gas and money....

Paid 2.79 for diesel which was the first time in a long time that the lowest grade of gas was actually higher. When I bought the Silverado, diesel was always lower then it seems like it was only a few months later when diesel went up to about the price of premium.

John, good question. I will try to be brief, so I don't bore everyone even more than I already have. You asked why are all of the oil companies making profit? It is simple supply and demand. Of all of our resources, oil is the one we absolutely cannot do without. It is not just used for our vehicles. It runs equipment, heats/cools our homes and business etc. Our big misconception is that the companies we purchase from (mobil, sunoco, etc) are who set the prices. Not true. It is trickle down economics, just backwards. In the USA, monopolies are illegal, as the precedent was first set with the Bell Operating Companies in the early 1900's. The companies that sell oil to the US refineries are not of US origin. Therefore, they do not fall under the same laws that would keep an American company from price fixing. Since the goods (unrefined oil) is purchased out of country, the US companies are have that loophole to use in raising gas prices. So, Saudi's gouge Exxon, Exxon gouges retailers, retailers gouge us. It has been going on as long as fossil fuels have been around. It is not a left wing or a right wing loophole. It is an American issue and we ALL need to write our elected officials to get it to stop. I hope that makes sense. I sometimes ramble.
As far as Bush tapping US reserves, I don't understand why this is a problem. At the beginning of Clinton's first term, he considered tapping them to help us out of the recession we were in at that time.
Bush may not be making any friends in the world community but, who cares? I go to sleep at night safe, not worried about whether or not Russians or Germans like me. They are mad at Bush for screwing up the nice setup they had with Saddam in that corrupt oil for food deal. I would be interested in hearing why Canadians do not like Bush. No, I will not rip on Canada or say that you exist because America allows it. There are many things I do not like about Canada but, there are also many things I do like. Battlefield is one of the nicest golf courses I have ever played.
You may also want to consider that the retailers are gouging us just as bad. We find out on Monday that oil just went up say $3.00 a barrel. The very next day, prices jump .20 cents. The retailer has thousand of gallons of fuel in the ground that he/she received at the cheaper price yet, the consumer is immedietally handed the increase. I suppose that is the fault of current administration too?
Sorry for the long-winded post. There are few things I am passionate about. My country is one of them.
Have a nice day.
