Raptor vr. Banshees
#21
Hello again,
I have no reason to lie. My digital speedometer is made by Topeak. Its calibrated to the nearest tenth of a millimeter and its accurate to +/- 1 mph.
I did make one mistake when I made my last post. Technically my gearing isn't "stock". My stock banshee tires were around 19.7 inches. My current tires are 19.4 inches, and I am running a 14 tooth front sprocket.
The difference in gearing only adds 2-3 mph. I know I checked it with my speedometer. Anyway, My point is that I not only out accelerated him in every gear, but I far exceeded his top speed. It wasn't even really very close, but I confess the same race against a stock banshee wouldn't be very close either.
My mods are relatively mild in comparison to what is possible. Side by side you'll never be able to get as much horsepower out of a Raptor as you will a Banshee for the same amount of money.

you made the comment that a banshee only beat the 400ex by a bike length, I don't know where you are from but down here in Texas a fine tuned stock banshee will rip the hell out of a 400ex with aftermarket exhaust and filter system, now the 400ex has an un-questionable killer take-off but the powerband of the banshee through the gears will take over, just look at any of the shootout drag times to top speed and it speaks for itself.

YOU OBVIOUSLY NEVER RODE A BANSHEE, THERE IS A SHOOTOUT ARTICLE BETWEEN THE BANSHEE AND THE RAPTOR IN ATVSPORT OR 4WHEEL ATV ACTION, AND THE POWER BETWEEN THE TWO ARE ACTUALLY VERY CLOSE, THE TOP SPEED IS HIGHER ON THE RAPTOR, AND IT SAYS THE RAPTOR WILL PULL AWAY ONCE IN FIFTH, I WILL BE THE FIRST TO ADMIT THAT THERE IS NO BURST OR AWESOME PULL IN SIXTH GEAR ON THE BANSHEE, I THINK THAT YOU HAVE TO GIVE THE RIDER SOME OF THE CREDIT, AN EXPERIENCED RIDER ON A BANSHEE (STOCK OR NOT) SHOULD NOT GET WHOPPED BY A STOCK RAPTOR AS BAD AS YOU DESCRIBED.

No Weibz,
My point is and was that a stock Raptor accelerates and tops out at almost the exact same numbers as a stock banshee. Put a set of Toomey pipes on the Banshee with jetting kit and air filter. Do the SAME thing to the Raptor and race again. Who do you think is going to win? At this point the stock banshee will do 78-79mph. It really depends on alot of factors. A Raptor's stock speed is in the neighborhood of 74. With a pipe it may do 76 if you've tuned it well.
I'm referencing everything to stock setups. Stock gearing, stock tires, etc. The only changes are what I mentioned above.
Simply put... It doesn't take very much performance mods to make a banshee faster than a Raptor with equal mods.
The Banshee comes alive with mods.

I live close to Haspin Acres in Indiana(Im there all the time) while I was watching them drag there(just for fun) I saw a Raptor get smoked by a few Banshees it was on dirt. Ive also watched them on the MX track and it got beat by a blaster. I have seen nothing but disapointment out of the Raptor.

I ride in the mountains, My Banshee (Toomy's) or not, couldn't handle the altitude changes, (I upgraded from a Mojave). Up until now there wasn't anything that would do what I wanted it to. Go fast from 5000' to 9000' without complaining. I saw my first Raptor today and as much as I would like to see one in the garage, I've done the training wheel thing and found there are too many trails out there to enjoy with out the need to keep hunting for that great big foot print a quad requires. Yes I miss the Banshee's power but I found as you all may find after a while manhandling a quad is so demanding compared to a two wheeler. I've found a good dirt bike (I'm a die hard 4 stroke fan obvious as to my riding local) is so much more fun and exciting than going the quad route.
Guys, This is not a quad bash as I've had many a year owning and riding the pi$$ out of them, and I still own one now AND I would really like to own the new Raptor.(back when...)
1) after seeing a Raptor today I knew this is what I needed P.B.(pre-Banshee)
2) The Raptor is what I was looking for but wasn't availible in the late 1998 and required for my riding arena.
3) I wasn't willing to wait years for the right quad, finally! the raptor hits the masses.
4) I found the right 4-stroke dirt bike is the real TICKET. (for me anyway) because I ride the Sierra Nevadas here in California.
I would like to recommend to all here to add a healthy serving dirt bike to your plate as there is a whole world of riding techniques, body english, and especially trails that the average 4 wheeler can't tackle. Dont get me wrong, I thrive on fast fire roads but on 2 wheels it's a whole other world. Much more of an adrenalene rush than before, I've fogged up my goggles many more times in the mountains on my WR400f than my modded Banshee or the small but nimble Mojave. BTW, If I knew then what I know now about 2 strokes (namely the ifamous "Banshee" )I would have never bought one. they just dont take to elevation changes. the're just too damn finicky, sure on the track, fine. or on the dunes, but for my money, it's well spent on the reliability of the 4 stoke and finally there exsist the one I would have liked to own, The Raptor!
Like I said before, sure I would like to own one and I'm sure my wife wouldn't bawk too loudly, honestly guys I currently don't have the room in the garage (just an excuse really, as I'm sure I could find room next to my cruiser and WR) but I truly feel that sport quads have there place and that is this; 'a stepping stone to what is truly a rush, which is the quest to mastering a dirt bike!' Never a McGrath or Charmichael will I be, but a weekend warrior by reading and learning how to "really ride"
Check out "Gary Semics Pro Motorcross and off road riding Techniques" book and you'll get an Idea as to what I mean.(a must buy book for any level of experience)
Well guys, I would really like to have owned a Raptor at the time I bought the banshee so I could have experienced what You all are experiencing out there in the "Raptor world" I can only fantasizse what it's like not to have to dink around with carbs, the cost of Toomy T-5's F#&%* Jets, mains, reeds, mix oil, everything it takes to get a Banshee to run right because let's face it, the Banshee is a dog out of the crate compared to one that just has a set of pipes on it! What a lesson! it took about $1000 to get it to truly open up well but it wasn't a Raptor which is what I needed for the mountain fire roads and trails at elevation.
So in short, this is what I've learned and I hope I've planted a seed to introduce you to your next machine and off road riding in its purest form, A bad *** (and of course, 4 stroke) Dirt Bike,
its the real deal.
you'll see what I mean.
HAPPY TRAILS, ALL!

Who cares???
I just don't care that your Craptor is faster than anything.
But you know what? There's one thing I'm gonna tell you.
I WILL NEVER CHANGE MY BANSHEE FOR ANYTHING ELSE IN TH WORLD.
It's almost stock (just aftermarket pipes/silencer), and it's such a blast when I hit the powerband, that I will never switch to a 4 stroke, even if it's better, has more torque and gets more power to the ground.
It's not a matter of being faster or whatsoever, it's just a matter of fun...and I'm having tons!
