Raptor carburetor (sucking air during wheelies)
#1
I was riding my Raptor today and started getting good at wheelies. I noticed that when I rode a wheelie for over 3 seconds, the motor would start sputtering and lose power. My best guess is that the fuel sloshes to the rear of the carburetor, causing air to get sucked in during wheelies. Has anybody else had this problem and is there a way to fix it? Dirt wheels commented on this same problem during their pre-production test of the Raptor but the guys from Yamaha were quoted as saying that they would put a baffle in the carburetor to help the fuel sloshing and that this would fix the problem. They evidently didn't fix the problem as quoted. Are there any aftermarket carburetor bowls that would hold more fuel? Is there a way to reroute the suction tube to the rear of the carburetor?

Beaubill,
You are not the only one with that problem. I have that problem too. I try to make some long wheelies but once i can get in the air for a while the engine would sputter and bring back my front down. sometime that don't happen to me at all! I was wondering what cause this problem. I love doing wheelies so please help me out. Thanks alot.

I just got mine yesterday, and so far, no problems. I can ride a wheelie for a while, and have had no problems. I wonder if the first shipment of Raptors had some flaws and the second ones were fixed. I don't seem to have that "tube" that everyone is talking about that is getting dirt to the crankcase. On the tips of my hoses, there are little extentions, almost like filters on a cigarette. Anyways, I love the machine so far. I took the baffle out and it seems to run better. It's crisper.

I suspect that those who have not had the problem with sputtering during wheelies have not had their quad at the balance point long enough at low rpm. My Raptor does not sputter unless I wheelie in first gear very slowly at a constant speed at the balance point for several seconds. I have no problem with sputtering during high speed wheelies or at any other time because I keep the Raptor slightly forward of balance point during those types of wheelies and gain speed during the wheelie.
