With the gas smell still in the oil and reading the posts on the topic about the smelly oil i was wondering what it would cost to get the top end replaced and the shop goes about 50 an hour and if worse comes to worse....what would it cost to have a new piston put in? I would love to do this myself but I just don't have the means so having someone else do it is the only way to go. So if anyone has an idea please let me know

Is your 05-yfz the bike with gas in the oil? Seems alittle soon to put a top end in it. Either way first make sure your carb vent tube isn' t blocked. If it is gas will run into the motor, instead of dripping out the vent. If you need to have if rebuilt, just the top end is going to cost around $500 to $750 dollars for parts and labor. $50 a hour seems excessive.

u mean there's gas in the oil? a worn upper end wont really cause that. Gas in the oil will CAUSE a worn upper end, maybe that's what you mean.
anyways, i would find the problem first. a shop will put a new upper end on, but if you have a carb problem letting gas run into the oil when the machine is shut off, you'll wreck all that work right away. My first guess is the needle-and-seat valve that the float turns on and off is sticking open, letting the gas overflow into the intake, runs into the cylinder and down into the crankcase. also a float level too high would do that, and a saturated float will sink in the fuel and open the valve. it could be any of these. I would fix this problem first, and then worry about the upper end.

depending on what you mean by a top-end rebuild, you are looking at about $50 for rings, $40 for a gasket kit, and 3 hrs of labor assuming you take it to the shop powerwashed, degreased, and take the plastic off to the point the mechanic has easy access. $50 for engine labor is the going rate around the Baltimore area.
Boring the cylinder will run about $50 plus the cost of the new piston & rings that will come as a set. The labor will still be about 3 hrs.
