You are right. I actually do relativly little Hill shooting. I prefer a fast paced ride through the dunes. Or a nice ride through the mountains. I can tell you from personal experiance that a carbed raptor doest like starting at 4500 ft and going to 11500 in a short time without jetting. My DS was real forgiving on jetting but I have yet to be with a 660 rider that was happy by 8000 ft. The Injection is awesome for trail riding. If I was only going to ride the dunes I would have put more $$ into the DS.

Cam, compression or maybe even an ignition, Most likely a cam though.

I really think a cam and maybe a higher compression piston could be the answer if you really want to be able to rev more and trying to just make more out of the bike.. Also, how about porting.. Just a thought..


about the origonal issue..

I think the farther you go on any machine you start making that machine one dimensional.. That is what happens out this way at Sand Mountain with banshees mostly, but I have seen others.. You put $ after $ into it and it becomes a hill shooter, or drag racer only.. You cant just jump on it and go duning,, Well I think the 700r hit the most points with me because of the handling, power, no more jetting, and all around riding that gets done by me in the conditions that I ride in.. I can go from 5000' to 12000' in the same days ride, now that is why the FI appeals to me.. A carbed bike will not like that trail ride, I know,, I was there.. even with a dial-a-jet..

now back to the drag racing.. . You could make any bike beat any bike as long as you got money... As for a stock 660 and a stock 700, 700 wins all the time, bike to bike..

see but your defination of trail riding is far from mine. just because of the terrain. You idea of trail riding is going up hill huge elevations, my idea of trail riding is flat area. I think your a forest and im a desert rider. I though about selling my rap for a 700r, but after last night im sticking with my rap. You right give it time and it will excel. 660's came out in out, and builders are still trying to get the kinks out, and make more power. ever few months another 660r comes out with more power, more torque, or a larger bore. That was 5 years ago and they still have a lot to learn. Im sorry but waiting 5 years for the 700r to come around with technogly is to long for me. Not saying that within the year, theor wont be a big-bore, cam and port job available. but i assure the first ones available are going to be as good as the ones 5 years down the road.

I agree with you on atleast one thing.. No two peoples idea of riding are ever the same and nobody has the perfect ride for everyone.. Yes my trail riding consists of mountains, I also do a lot of desert riding and I play on the sand.. I like shooting the hill at the dunes and the drag racing, uphill or flat.. But that is not all, if it was I would never have sold the Banshee... For me and what I like to do and how I like to ride, the 700R made very good sense.... The handling is by far much better than the 660's. That meant alot to me also..

A good cam will definitly be what you want if you want more power in the higher RPM's. The Hotcam stage 2 will give you power up to 6,800-7k RPM, but you need to replace valve springs for that. I don't think the stage 1 cams raises the RPM performance nearly as much. The 660's didn't ever make any power over 6,500 either unless you installed a better cam, but after looking at your dyno chart again your 700 looks like it's only making power up to 6,200 RPM. Looks like Yamaha decided to sacrifice a little top end for an increase in torque, I bet this really helps it as a trail machine. The 4 valve head would also help in the torque department and could be another bottleneck to the lower peak RPM. Another thing to consider is new ignition, but if the bike doesn't make good power when being revved than increasing the RPM rev limit probably won't help to much. The improved ignition curve might help, but nothing like what a cam will do.

Maybe not exactly what you are looking for, but should give you a good idea of where the 660r is piped, jetted and airboxed with all the different manufacurers...I came across it doing some research. It looks like it was done by dirt wheels a while back and not the easiest to read though...basically, what they did was take the pipe manufacturers recommedations for jetting and airbox mods, install the pipe and run the dyno. ah the infamous dirtwheels pipe shootout from 02. I think we've all got this issue around the house some where. Still the ol' CT puts the ponies down and i run 175/180 jets. But this post isnt a dyno shootout on the 660. He was looking for a dyno for a SLIP-ON, most of these pipe are complete exhausts. Back to subject was about the 700r making weird noises, and clunking when shifting. I was just curious if anyone has heard about this....
