Default Installed Stage one cam, and valves are out of wack........

I installed a hotcam stage one into the raptor yesturday in my shop class. It was in there for a while, and the shop did all the work, including installing the stage one, then the stock back in after a slight problem with the other stage one. The mechanic did all the work for that. When I installed the hotcam, and started it up, it ran but the valves are slopping around in there. We spent 4 hrs adjusting them, they are at the correct STOCK settings, and seem to be way too loose, so we tightened them many times to try and luck out on a non ticking setting. No luck. Any help is appreciated.

To get to TDC i got the sideways " I " in the center of the small window.

Thanks for any help guys----Rider1169

Timing is always very tough to get advise on. Are you taking into account the tooth your timing backs up after you correctly install the timing chain tensioner? Always check the installation procedure of the tensioner so the tensioner in not improperly set to fully extended position. This has been a big problem for rookie Raptor modders.

Is this the first time you installed this? Hotcams has the specs on their website but the correct valve lash isnt stock, its eight thousandths on the intakes and 10 thousandths by spec but its better to use six thousandths for the intake and eight for exhaust.

If you didnt already look at the hotcams website and read the installation instructions you should. And even when you get the " l " in the window you can still be 180 degrees off.

The decompresssion can be installed 180 out also. Double, tripple check it. Almost guaranteed thats where your problem lies.

When the decompression mechanism is operating correctly, a small .060 decompression pin (for lack of better wording) sticks out of the cam and bumps the exhaust valve at low RPM's. This bleeds off cylinder pressure for easier starting. After a certain rpm is attained, the decompression weights bolted to the end of the cam swing open and make the decompression pin lower, bringing back proper cylinder pressure. When the decompression mechanism is installed incorrectly, the decompression pin sticking out of the cam does not return to it's seated position. When this happens, the decompression arm wears very fast (since it's hitting the exhaust valve every revolution of the cam) or shears off. Of course undo wear or shearing of the decompression pin is not good for your engine, leading to potential engine repairs and at the very least harder starting.
