Default Kodiak Need Help

I have a friend with a Kodiak 400 that will not start. It thinks it is in gear but it is in Neutral. Where does it sense the gear position from? Has anybody else had this problem? Thanks for any help?

What year is the kodi?
If its fairly new, it should start in gear, if you hold the back brake ,hand lever in.

Thanks for a place to start looking. I found out this is a 2001 Kodiak 400 4x4. It has the same problems you described. It probably has the same problem. Thanks Again! I'll let you know how it turns out.
