Default AV gas VS. Octane booster

I thought I better ad this.
Avgas, or leaded race gas, WILL ruin O2 senosrs and catalytic converters.
Do not run it in vehicle with a cat or a fuel injected vehicle with an O2 sensor.
I don't know if this applys to the new Raptor.
The first bike that comes to mind is a new BMW.
Does the Cannondale have an O2 sensor?

Race gas contains lead too. Only specialty unleaded race fuels don't.

Av gas won't hurt your quad at all. If it did, it would not be approved for aircraft. Use what is more convienent for you if you need the octane.

Don't use octane booters, it's a complete rip off.

Don't use anything but pump fuel if you don't have any internal engine mods or have signs of detonation. It's like throwing money in a fire pit. (Unless you really like the smell of burn't race fuel)

my question is...

Why do so many of you guys want to run race fuel or AV gas so bad anyway?

just like the guy above me said...if you don't have higher comp or some other reason to...YOU ARE WASTING MONEY!

I run c16 in my race rabbit 16vT because it runs 15psi but it doesn't even need that hardcore of fuel to run good. I could probably get away with 114 and still be 100% safe. For that matter....I run 10psi on 93 pump with 9:1 compression and make 260whp out of a 1.8L motor.

Do you REALLY think a stock motor with some bolt ons requires that kinda fuel...don't think so...

My resume,
My race rabbit.

My resume,
My race rabbit.
A very good point indeed.
The best reason I can give you is consistancy.
No matter where I am or what time of year it is avgas is always the same.
You don't have to retune for a new batch of gas.

Or maybe I just get avgas cheap because I work at the airport?

Av gas smells good too. If you get it cheap, there is no reason not to run it.

You will not be able to notice the differnce in pump fuel --station to station or year to year. The energy content of the fuel is what gives you your hp. This changes slightly with ethonal or methonal %. You could maybe see the difference on a high resolution dyno, but you won't feel it. Slight changes in octane won't affect a stock bike with bolt-ons.

If you think you can feel a difference, it's purely psychological.

Yes Av gas is more consistent but it is formulated to burn longer. This could cause serious heat problems in some engines. Lead may also be a problem. 100LL (Low lead) has more than twice the lead automotive fuel has and could cause buildup problems. Aviation have different timing and clearance specifications and compression ratios than quad engines. In most cases Av gas is not a good idea for small engines. I have worked on aircraft for over 20 years and seen this debate many times. Aviation fuel is designed for aviation engines.

Here is some good info on Octane and fuel.

See the top of the page for different sheets. There is a lot of info there. Put on your tech hat.

Av gas will make the motor run a little hotter because it is designed to burn slow for more torque Also the heat helps with icing on the carbs and fuel lines at high alt The heat will also give you better mpg

here's a question..

have you guys actually dynoed your machines to see if the AV gas is worth it?

somebody already said it once but maybe some of you guys either A. didn't read it or B. can't comprehend it.

RUN THE LOWEST OCTANE FUEL YOU CAN WITHOUT HURTING YOUR MOTOR!

You can say AV fuel is good for mpg(come on...does this even matter) and that it's more consistent but the ultimate question is...is this is what is BEST for your quad?

if you some of drag racers/sand racers/more hp oriented folks wouldn't mind conducting a test. Take your quad down to a dyno and run regular unleaded, premium and then av fuel. If all variables are kept the same(good luck). I would bet the results would be pretty interesting.

but hey...what do I know...keep pumping that fuel into your quad.
