Modding Raptors??? Spend my money!
#1
Hey there guys. As you can see from my post count i am new to the site. At 32 years old i bought my first quad, owned it a month, and am already bored with the stock power. I am just looking for some suggestions of proven mods. I am not a newbie to motors as i have been building drag cars for years and understand the workings of of a motor well. However, when it comes to quads, (as in all areas of performance) there are companies that have a great reputation for aftermarket parts, and then there are the ones that attract newbies with untrue claims of power and such. This is where i could use your help. Funds is not a problem, however, i hate spending cash for something that doesn't deliver. The bike i bought is an 04 Raptor 660R. I know it isn't the greatest bike out there, but i got a decent price on one and wanted to try something used out first to get my feet wet. Then if i am impressed, i might spring for a new one once i understand them a little more.
My uses for the bike are mainly trail riding. The area i ride in is filled with banked turns, lots of jumps, and steep hill climbs. Not to mention lots of mud. I have gotten the hang of jumping the thing pretty well... (used to ride a KX-250) and am full aware of the weight of this thing. If you could give me some suggestions for power mods first and then some suspension second i would really appreciate it.
Thanks for all the help... WOT

get a slip-on pipe...either White brothers, HMF, CT or Yoshimura. A dynojet kit stage 2, proflo intake and you are set with the bolt-ons. If you wanna save some money buy the stuff on ebay. Ive been really lucky and have gotten white brothers pipes for $80 ($200ish new!). As for other mods, get some propeg nerfs and get rid of those duncrap tires.

So what kind of power gains are we talking about with the mods you listed? Is it a significant difference? What do you think about changing the back sprocket down a tooth or two. I have always been a big fan of gears with the cars i have built? I am not too worried about top end, but i love neck snapping throttle response. Thanks for the replies.
I forgot to mention. the quad came with nerf bars and shock covers. those are the only two mods.

How much are you looking to spend?
Better airflow (intake/pipe) with proper jetting and a 12 tooth front sprocket will really wake up a stock Raptor for the least amount of $$. If that isn't enough, things get expensive quick.

Is a simple pipe and intake really going to make that much of a difference? YES
Are these motors that restricted from the factory? YES YES YES! Take a look at the airbox snorkel, you'll see a couple of flaps restricting air.
