Default 05 Grizz axle not broke but have problems

I have about a 1000 miles on my Grizz and this weekend I was going to camp and noticed the wheeler was acting funny....as I was going over some roots in the trail on a off camber to the left noticed the right tire was not spinning?????? I thought to myself ....oh great the axle broke but I looked at the axle and it had pulled out of the rear end housing. I looked every thing over and every thing was tight like the upper and lower a-arms. When I got back to camp I took apiece of wood and a hatchet and tapped the axle in so it would now drive the right side tire ok. I used the wheeler all weekend and never had the problem again. Well I just got done taking everything apart , everything was tight as I expected because It had never been taking apart before. BUT, the axle on the rear end side has a lock ring at the very end that sits in a groove and then about a 1/4" more splines on the very end and those were worn down pretty bad. Does any body have any idear what went wrong and if there is a way to fix this so it won't happen again. The 4 wheeler is out of warrenty so its coming out of my pocket. I test drove it and the seal don't leak and everything seems to go fine I just don't know why this happened!

Humm I would say maybe your lock ring might be worn and allowed the axle to slide out and in the process while it was moving it ruined the axle end. I would say a new locking ring would probable work but not sure if you need a new axle depending on how bad it is. Only otherthing would be the housing that holds the axle and the locking ring maybe worn some not allowing the ring to lock? Other than that I'm not sure unless something else that holds the axle is out of wack and allowing the axle to much side to side movement. I'm kinda new at this but have replaced my axle boot so I know what your talking about. Anyone else with any ideas?

I inspected the rear end side of the splines that the axle locks into and they are fine. I would say that the metal that the axle is made out of is softer than the rear end splines ( thank god ) I wish this would have happened under warrenty I would just take it to the dealer and drop it off and let them figure it out! I think I will get another axle and see if it fits tighter.

I didn't know that they had problems with the axles popping out in earier models, I though that they were breaking. I guess I should call the dealer and see what they say about it. they probably won't do any thing but maybe worth the phone call. And worst of all nothing is really wrong with it now i have put it all back together again, the seal isen't leaking or anything. Mind boggling.

the axle's snapping issues were i believe even earlier yet then that

the axles popping out was due to a poorly designed retaining clip,,,like i said,,,you are the first ive seen with an '05 that has had this issue

I think I will put in a new clip and see what happens before I spend 350$ for a new axle. Thanks

not a good idea putting an already damaged axle back in,,,you may cause a larger issue ($$$$$) if a piece of it breaks off in the Diff

Lafngas,
I have recently experienced the exact same thing that you described with my 04 Grizz. I replaced the c-clip on the right rear axle and it came out again. Upon further inspection I noticed that the dust shield had moved aprox an eighth of an inch towards the final drive housing. This had been preventing the c-clip from seating into the groove, after repositioning the dust shield, the axle popped back in and the c-clip locked in. I thought I had this licked until the other day when I heard a popping sound coming from the rear. Not only had the axle come out again, but so had the one on the other side! Needless to say the dealer has never heard of this before. My machine is there now waiting in line. How did you make out with yours? What was the fix for this?
Thx
Jimmy2
