oil burning

I didn't fully understand your question. Are you asking what the symptoms caused by oil burning would be?
Oil level dropping
Valve stem seals will trickle oil into the cylinder when idling and coasting so you get a puff of blue smoke when you hit the gas but it should clear up under load.
Rings will usually give you steady blue smoke in your exhaust that increases with throttle application. The bigger the leak, the more blue smoke.
Oil only burns blue. Black smoke is a rich mixture, white smoke is usually coolant getting into the combustion chamber.
Keep a close eye on your oil level. Quite a bit of blue smoke means quite a bit of oil consumption.

It emits light smoke when it is cold with the choke on, as it warms up you turn the choke off and the smoke clears up. Your friend says when you bury the throttle while it is cold and choked that if it pops and bogs it is burning oil!!!
Unbelievable! He doesn't happen to be trying to buy it from you does he?
