Default Gear Shift Help for new 87 Warrior Owner

First time poster here

I just acquired an 87 Warrior from a friend and I need some help with the shifter. When the Forward and Reverse Shifter is in the forward position (lever falls into dentent position) it acts like that part of the transmission is somehow disconnected. No matter what gear (1-5) I put it in, when I let the clutch out, it rolls freely without being in gear. It acts the same whether the clutch is in or out.

When I put it in reverse, it locks up the rear wheels, whether the clutch is in or out.

I've played around with diffrent combinations of the clutch, forward/reverse shifter and the regular shifter, and still cannot get the forward gears to engage.

The Warrior has been in storage for a long time, but was running when it was stored. The starter isn't working, and I was trying to pull start it w/ my truck, but since I can't get the gears to engage, I can't get it started. Any ideas on what to try would be greatly appreciated. I'm ordering a service manual, but won't have it for a few days.

Also, since i need a starter, what year starters are interchangeable w/ an 87??

Thanks,

John

My mistake, I only saw 1-5 on the shifter pattern decal, but when I looked at it again, the top corner (where the 6 would be) was torn off. Any ideas on why it won't go into gear?

when it isn't running it is difficult to find the gears and such...there is a pull start on the fourwheeler...try using that to start it up

I tried the rope pull start several times, but didn't have any luck. Even w/ the compression release it the rope start doesn't seem to whirl things over enough to get it going, especially since it was sitting for a long time. That's why I was trying the pull start w/ the truck.

I'm thinking the same thing you mentioned, that w/o the engine running that the gears are not meshing up like they should. I may end up having to get a new starter before I can get it sorted out. I see a buch on e-bay, will basically any year fit an 87?

Thanks,

John

well first you need to rip the carb off and rebuild/clean it out. Get all the old gas out of it. It will not start at all if it has any old flat gas in it. also change the spark plug. get it all back together and she should fire right up, unless the engine is blown or somthing. Then you can shift throw all the gears.

I'll give that a try. The carb had been rebuilt a couple years ago, and the tank was empty when I put fresh gas in, but there may be old gas or gummy residue left in the carb. The throttle cable was sticking some initially, but I freed that up w/ some WD40 and working it back and forth.

I'm ordering a manual in the AM, but will be a few days before it arrives i the mailand I can get everything apart. I'd be tempted to disassemble everything w/o a manual, but I always feel better having the manual in case I get stuck.

Thanks,

John

those warriors don't like to go into gear unless you have them running. the only thing you can try is to just put the bike in 1st and let the clutch out and push the bike back and forth and hopefully that'll make it engage. the only thing is probably wrong with the starter is that the brushes need to be replaced and that is cheap. also I would pull the battery out and fill it back up with acid and recharge it back to full. I've already had the same problems your having with your warrior.

Thanks for the reply! I'm hoping that getting it running will solve the problem. I tried pushing it around, pulling the starter rope, shifting gears and a bunch of different combinations, but no luck. I bought a new remanufactured starter off e-bay for $75 that will be here Tuesday. The old one is already removed. I played around with the rope starter until the rope busted, so I'll have to fix that at some time. I picked up a Clymer manual which is already coming in handy.

New front bearings and seals are on the way also and I have to rebuild or replace the front master cylinder. E-bay is becoming a very good friend

I know I have to replace a few things, but the price was right as I traded my best friend some small palm trees for the Warrior. It was running fine a year or so ago when he parked it, so I'm assuming that there's nothing major wrong w/ the tranny. I'm really looking forward to riding it!

Thanks,

John
