Default Gear Shift Help for new 87 Warrior Owner

Hi,

It's not running yet, but I'm getting closer. Starter came Tuesday, I installed it, and it turned over fine, but wouldn't start. Checked the spark and was getting a very intermittent spark. Checked the spark plug boot last night and it shows open on the ohmeter, supposed to have 10K ohm max resistance.

Off to the dealer at lunch today for a new spark plug boot and I'll try it this evening. It's a little frustrating, since everything is step by step and I'm anticipating that once I get the spark solved I'll have to deal w/ carb issues. Once that's done, I may have to deal w/ transmission issues, but I'm hoping it's as everyone indicated that once its running that getting into gear won't be an issue.

Makes me wish I had a brand new one to walk out to, turn the key and ride, but my wallet overides that wish. Plus I enjoy working on stuff.

Thanks,

John

Well,

So much for the spark plug boot. Installed that and still only a very intermittent spark. Check the coil with the new boot on and according to the manual the coil is bad. I'm going to check the stator as well, before I go buy a new coil. Dealer wants $50 for coil, e-bay one is $17, but I'll have to wait several days for it to get here.

Signed,

Frustrated in Odessa

Lol! Yeah your going to have to put some money in her. I bought a 1989 warrior this past summer for $400 bucks. I now have $2200 in it. But I have redone it from the ground up. I still need to get tires, and put the engine back together. There a lot of fun to too build. I will post some pictures of before and after when its done. Keep me posted on your progress.

The fun continues:

I called my other local dealer and they had an aftermarket coil for $27. Replaced the coil this evening, and still a very intermittent spark. Tommorow's project will be to check out the stator and I guess the CDI after that. My Clymer manual doesn't provide any troubleshooting info for the CDI, anyone have any suggestions??

One bit of good new, one of my friends who used to own a Warrior came over and was able to get the bike in gear, so at least that problem is solved!

Any ideas on what else to check would be appreciated.

Thanks,
John

Have you tryed cleaning out the carb yet? Even if she is getting a little spark i would think it would fire. Sounds like the engine is not getting any gas. Umm with the CDI i think your dealer can test them.

No, Haven't messed w/ the carb yet. It's only giving about one small spark in every 2-3 seconds of cranking, so I don't think it's got enough to fire it.

Wow! I must have misunderstood you. Yeah a spark that weak is not going to fire the engine. sounds like you need a new starter.
