there are a couple visual differences between the years. The 01s had remote reservoirs on the rear shocks, and the tubing of the subframe was square. You can also differentiate somewhat by plastic color, if it is still stock. As far as the VIN and the model year, I think it is either the first number or the last number, but it will be the last two digits of the year.

01 models have tranny problems, I'd look for another bike.
My bike is an 03 and looking at my VIN there's only one 3 and it's in the middle so I'm guessing it's not a straight translation. The info on how to read the raptor VIN has been posted before and should turn up in a search. I'll see if I cant dig it up if I get a chance.
