ATV shootouts - 49 state Raptor or Cali' version
#3
What exactly is the difference between Cal/49 state versions. I heard someone on here say it was just the exhaust pipe, but I don't believe that is it. There is nothing you can really do to an exhaust short of putting on a cat that is going to effect emissions. Does anyone know the exact details on what the difference is???

I own a Raptor that was purchased in NV and my friend has one that was purchased in CA. They are identical from all outward appearances. In a race they are also identical. In the sand they are identical. Ride one or the other and you cannot "feel" a difference. I think the reason for this is that they are identical but thats just my 2 cents!

That is the question.......why are we seeing 33hp to 38hp? Also, it seems that the pipe manufacturers are either getting around 5-7hp or 10-12hp. It seems one is building a pipe for the Cali' version and another is piping a 49 state version. If this is true....the difference appears to be in the exhaust system.

Gary,
Maybe I'm missing something here, but the low end lean jetting should be mostly caused by a lean primary jet.
Top HP numbers would differ more because of a main jet being too lean. If Yamaha was to lean out the engine some in the name of emissions, they would probably do it on the top end of the RPM range where it wouldn't really affect rideabiltiy.
This is probably more than likely the case since we are seeing about a 5hp difference on top and the low end seems to be pretty much the same on most of them.
