06 Kodiak 450 ???
#1
Just bought an 06 Kodi 450 about a month ago. Been using it every weekend at the hunting camp. This weekend had a chance to use the diff lock in a bad mud hole. My question is I put the bike in low, and engaged the diff lock. For about 15-30 sec the motor sputtered and spit and then seemed to catch. When she caught she really pulled, but I'm wandering about the sputtering. Is this normal? Someone at the camp with an 06 Grizz told me it was normal, does that when you engage from a stopped position. Can the 4wheel drive and diff lock be engaged at a slow speed?
Thanks for the help. I have been reading this forum for a few months trying to decide which bike I wanted. Every post here was very helpful in making my decision.

When I got my 03 450 about a week ago I found the same thing. Not sure about the 06 but my owners man. said to lock it from stoped and turn the handle bars back and fourth (Jiggle) until the diff lock engages ie diff lock light stops blinking and is on steady. Worked for mine. Hope this helps

That sputtering is normal. If the 4 wheel diff. lock doesn't engage fully (the 4wd picture will still be blinking), it will do that. I had that sputtering happen the 1st time I engaged my diff. lock from a dead stop. I think it's a safety feature so that the gears don't get stripped until the lock is fully engaged.
You can engage the limited slip 4wd (red button) from a slow speed, it won't hurt it. I don't engage mine over 5-8 mph though just to be safe. I do it all the time on my Kodiak and my buddy does it with his grizz. However I've not engaged the diff. lock from any type of speed. I do engage the diff lock from a very slow roll though, I mean creeping. It seems to engage it much faster and I never have any sputtering when doing it that way. Jiggling the handlebars as diesel12 says also helps.
