Here are a couple of things to consider:

The only reason anyone would need a 4X4 quad is for mud riding, or maybe snow. The wolverine has the sport quad look so it offers no protection for the rider from the mud. Wolverine riders are always the muddiest after the ride.

Though the Wolverine has the sport quad look, it doesn’t have the performance of a sport quad. It’s too heavy and it has the extra drag of the 4X4 drive system. Don’t forget that sporty race ready automatic clutch for those bang shifts as you ratchet through the gears.

In my opinion it has the worst of both worlds. If you want a sport quad but want 4X4 the only solution is to own two quads optimized for each intention. Otherwise you will be frustrated no matter what you do.

As to the Rubicon and 4X4, for autos yes, for quads probably not. I would be willing to ride the Rubicon on a 400ex as long as I get to choose my own solutions. If they go through there with Jeeps I'm not worried, a 2X4 quad can go places a 4X4 Jeep can't go.

I agree with the comment about a true sport utility quad, the fact that there are none. Not many 2wd 400EX riders or Raptor riders will tell you to buy a Wolverine, hell they love the machine they ride for there riding styles. I love the Wolverine but yea I would like to be able to slide the rear a little more. I think it was a fair trade off for the different types of terrrain I plan to encounter. Mud, rocks, streams, mountains, light snow etc. Still its up to you.
As far as riding, I ride with a King Quad (leave him in the dust obviously, and he doesn't have the same riding style I do either), Foreman ES (no problem running or outrunning him) and a Grizzly (fast machine and a lot of low gear but he does get out of the way). Now Fatty bought his Grizzly because he is a big boy and he wanted to have 4X and 2X running modes and didn't want to get too dirty, not to mention he doesn;t want to worry about gears on the trail, hey good for him, he has just as much fun riding as I do popping over rocks and getting muddy. So get what you want.
I will however say that I have heard of problems with the Polaris Scrambler being belt driven, if you get the belt wet (very wet) it will slip and you will lose power and over time burn up the belt. I plan on getting wet A LOT so I didn't buy that machine. It does ooze power and is an easy machine to ride 4X and 2X. Just a word of caution though about the belt.
Now lastly SNOW, get a snowmobile if you want to cruise through snow. I don;t knwo many ATVs that can get through 2ft of snow, especially through the woods. 1ft no problem 1 1/2' well then you are pushing it but 2ft and up forget it, break out the sleds.

I was wrong earlier when I stated that the Wolverine cannot go in too deep of snow. I was riding through 1 1/2 to 2 ft of snow this week with my nephews in upstate NY, the area that has been getting pounded for the past week 25" in 24 hours kinda thing.
I haven't had a chance to try it out in hard pack of frozen snow like mowtown but I can attest that the Wolverine breaks trails nicely in 2 ft of fresh lake effect snow (fresh powder and big flakes)!! My nephews were riding an older honda 4trax 4X4 and they were having just as much fun!! Though they couldn't keep up! I hope you get it out in some powder Motown, cause it was a blast!
Forget the snowmobiles!!! They would never have made it through the mud!!

I just bought a Kodiak and it is a good climber and mudder and has great handling for a midsize quad at 401cc's.It's also got a choice of 4x or 2x option in case you want to spin the rear tires and play.Test drive what you can and enjoy.
