I have always used synthetic oil on my motorcycles and on my ATV with great results, has anyone used synthetic oil on a Grizzly? Will it create any problems? I have a 2000 and I use it for hunting.

I USE it in my 2000 Grizzly and have NO problems. I hope that it makes the engine stronger to last longer.

Could you tell me what type and what weight. Yamaha recomends 5W30 but even the local dealers do not carry it. They use 10W30 and 20W50 but I am affraid of the heavier weight because of the possible transmission seal leakeage

I have a 2000 Grizz, and I run synthetic everywhere--motor and diff's. I stick with Yamaha's recommendations with viscosity--Mobil 1 has you covered there-even for the diff's. I change it actually more often that recommended--it's not that expensive, and the oil still gets dirty-don't forget that the oil is there to remove contaminants also-not just lubricate

I've have used Castrol 20w50 since day one. Haven't had any problems, and the Grizzly just keeps running stronger and stronger. I'm coming up on 600 miles, I changed it at 100 miles and twice since then. Now I will change it twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. I use 20w50 because of the fact that its an air/oil cooled engine. Heavier weight oil won't break down as much when the engine gets real hot, prolonging engine life. I rode it pretty hard this summer when it was 90+ degrees outside, and it worked just perfect, never had a single problem! Its a brick, no matter how hard I beat on it, it just keeps coming back for more!

ive heard that synthetic can clean up your engine so good that you may develop leaks, on an older machine. any comments?

I change mine about every 300 miles. sooner if I ride through a lot of water just t omake sure no water hurts the engine. I'm proud to say that no matter how deep of water I go through it has never gotten in the oil.

I believe that synthetic oil doesn't actually perform cleaning action, but is fluid enough that it may leak out on old gaskets and such. I've had it happen on an older truck I had-when I put conventional oil back in the leak stopped. I do not know if smaller motors have the same problem. I do believe in synthetic oil-I took bottles of 5W-30 in both conventional and synthetic and set them outside overnight in -20 temperature and poured them out at the same time--INCREDIBLE DIFFERENCE. Convinced me.
