engine braking is enough unless you are on steep hills

You obviously don't ride fast enough. If I didn't have good brakes I'd be off in the toolies constantly.

That squeaking brake can drive me crazy!! I havent replaced the pads yet but when it starts to squeak bad just clean the edge of the disk with a scoring pad or a ruff cloth. It works for hundreds of miles. Just clean the edge real good.

stick to the yamaha brake pads they are more money but last alot longer than the after market ones but you will go through brake pads quite often my only complaint about the kodiak

Recently put new pads on front and rear of my 2005 Kodiak. The fronts were Emgo ( I think) sintered metal, aftermarket from a local atv shop. The rear was a Moose sintered metal. The squeeking has been greatly reduced. Every once in a while the mud will pile up around the rotor and then will start makin noise. Just a little shot with the garden hose or a slow ride thru a creek or water hole does the trick. Haven't checked the wear yet, have about 250 miles since changing.
