Default 2003 yamaha warrior..should we buy??

hey guys...my brother is going to get into the sport of atv'ing...and i wanted him to get a sporty quad to somewhat keep up with me and ride on the same terrain. i'm usually brand loyal but polaris doesnt really offer anything like we're looking for. and yamaha is my second choice definately and we found a 2003 yamaha warrior with about 60 hours on it for 2200... its all stock. i havent had a chance to see it yet.

o yeah, my brother is 13 years old..about 5'6 or so i dont really know. avg weight...he's rode mini bikes and that sorta stuff so i know he can handle it...but i just wanted to get your guys' opinions. thanks a bunch.

$2200 is a good price for a 2003 as long as there's no major problems with it. It's a great quad to learn on, it's very reliable, and it'll go anywhere your preddy can go. (i'm not saying that a stock one is as fast as a predator, but it'll keep up as long as you're not racing)

If the 350 would turn out to be too much power for him at first, the warrior has a throttle limiter screw so you can limit the power until he's ready for all of it.

thanks recon99. and yeah i meant if we were to go to little sahara again he'd have fun in the same sorta stuff as me as opposed to a ute. and i wouldnt expect one of them to keep up if we were racing .. and about the throttle limiter, thats another good plus that my padre will be happy to hear about. i might go check it out tomorrow, what are the things i should look for.?

I agree the warrior is a good first atv that was my first and i love it. it has good power for what it is. things to look for would be the engine making a knocking sound....mine did that and ive heard others doing that too and i was concernd about it so i ended up putting a ton of money into it and its fine now. everyone else says its fine though so i dont know. good luck

I bought a 2001 warrior brand new and my valves knock all the time even after adjusting. I'm not saying that they are all OK like this, but mine is fine and like I said still continue to knock after adjustments. I love my warrior and one of the main reasons for this is becuase the engine sits up a good bit towards the front of the machine so climbing hills (any size) keeps the front end down. However popping the front end up is still no problem while on flat land.

You seem to know about checking everything else since you are already in the sport. There is no harm in going to check it out and taking it for a spin if they will let you. Let us know how it goes.

they might have been out of adjustmet but i was drag racing at the time and missed my shift and over reved it by a lot and right after that is when the motor started knocking real bad and i had a few people listen to it and they said the cr ank bearing where shot from over reving it so i got a new one and a new piston and oil pump. its all good now runs liek a champ its a 388 so basicly a 400cc

388? Are you another one of these guys that thing a .40 overbore means 40cc? A .40 overbore is like 5 cc's when you do the math.

i got a 1996 and it was so old its been nothing but problems but that due to the fact that it is 10 years old. One thing to watch for is if the a-arms are noticeable screwed up or dented, they dent pretty easily that y i got a skidplate for them, also look at the oil to make sur ethe guy chnaged it enough or else you will have signifigant engine damage, also make sure it starts easilyu, warriors starters have lots of parts that go pretty often. I know to look for this cause it was all bad on mine, the 2003 should be fine although it wouldnt hurt to check those things
