Default 01 Raptor problem with starting NOT THE STARTER

Hey guys hope you can help me. My buddy has a 01 Rappy 660 and he told me it needed a starter me being a mechanic he wanted me to change it. I shouldnt have believed him cause I got there and he had it partially tore apart so I never heard it till the new starter was in. You guessed it same noise and problem.

What is happening is when you hit the starter it will turn but the engine wont turn over. If you pop it into 1st gear and move the quad a bit most of the time it will start. Now when it is running it sounds like crap and once in a while after you rev it it will sound normal.I have been comparing the normal sound to my 03 rappy. I think it is the one way clutch in the trans for the starter. Has anyone heard this before. If anyone thinks this is the problem have you done a one way clutch on a rappy .
I looked on ebay and there are alot of one way clutched on it so I am taking it that it is a common problem. I do know about the crappy trans they had in 01 hence why I bought a 03. any help would be appreciated.
