03 Raptor 660r carb cleaning

Default 03 Raptor 660r carb cleaning

Hello all, my Raptor is running like crud and I am told the carbs tend to need to get cleaned on these. I called the Yamaha dealer and he says they charge roughly an hour for labor just to clean them up. I don't really have any issue getting the carbs out but I am curious should I remove the bowl carefully and clean it out as well? Anything else? Also, if anyone has any good methods for cleaning the stock air filter, I am all ears. Thank you in advance.

Cleaning your carbs is a straight forward process and wouldn't even take an hour once you got used to doing it. You'll remove the bowl, I recommend taking out your needles, idle screws and so on. Use carb cleaner on it, if you mess up a gasket, don't worry. Put the gasket in the sun for a while and it will go back, I've done it before. You'll get alot of little parts when you take your carbs apart, keep them together. If you need a walk through or something, let me know and I can hep you with that. The stock air filter, unless it's a gauze type filter (ie a K&N), you can't really clean it, you can only replace it. For that, I'd recommend picking up a K&N, you get better airflow (read: more power), and you can clean it.

I appreciate the info. Any recommended places for the K&N or are they all probably about the same pricewise?

Your definately gonna have to pick up the K&N you need from your Yammie dealership most likely, as per most Automotive stores don't carry them. But largely, the price is the same. Let me see what I can find... Here is the Air cleaner - http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?Prod=YA-6601 . Now, I'm not sure if your air filter is exposed on your quad, but if it is and you ride in alot of mud and dust, I recommend a prefilter (also called a scrub bag), I use one on my racecar which has exposed aircleaners on 37mm Keihen Flatsides on a 2 mill over 600cc Bike motor. K&N makes a pre-filter for them, but I don't like it, it doesn't look that cleanable/durable to me, you can see it here - http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?Prod=25-6601

Outerwears makes much better stuff, I couldn't find one on their website for that airfilter, but I'd call them at 1-800-967-3450, I would be amazed if they didn't have one that would fit in. The outerwears are really easy to use, they clean off easily (soap and water).
