What all did you take off the bike, just the left hand right, did you also change the pick up for the ignition, or just the stator. the timing cant really be changed on the bike unless the cam is removed the cdi tells the coil to spark based on a the pickup. Will the bike idol, have you checked the valve lash, if you have adjusted that with the motor 180 out, it will be waaaayyy off

I just took the left cover off, replaced the stator only, and then put it back together. I usually will not start and when it does it has a huge backfire and dies. i did nothing to the cam or the valves.

What was it running like before the stator replacemant?

Cause to me it sounds like valve lash right now.

Try tow starting it..if it fires up and stays running when you apply trottle and wont idle at all thats intake valves for sure.

Well, I would run the valves real quick and check. Bring the motor to tdc on the compression stroke! Check valves. I would start there. Do you have a buddy with a CDI you could check

No but thats a good idea, i find it hard to belive the valves would be screwed up becuase it was running fine before I started, should i get and aftermarket CDI box? What kind of benefits does this give you?

With a stock motor nothing really other than changing where the rev limiter is set. I run a stock one on my bike. im just running through the ideas, but the way its actin really reminds me of valves way out of adjustment. its pretty easy to check. If thats not it, I would then move to the ignition pick up, if that has ben damaged during the installation of the stator, your bike would then be out of time. Ricky Stator sells on for 30 dollars, there all over ebay. I would find a bike newer than 02 and check the CDI since that is free, as well as the valves first

Did you ever check your timing? If its way off, it could be a sheared flywheel key. Your valve timing would be correct but the motor would be firing wrong.
