In WV, you can get one w/a bow and 2 w/ a gun if you get an extra stamp. You can also get either sex in some areas w/a muzzleloader. Various doe stamps are also available. So far I've got a doe in archery and the buck in gun season. Poachers are rampant in this area and it hurts the deer numbers. Personally, I can't see the sport or satisfaction of killing deer illeagally. ATV's also get a bad rap because of poachers who trespass while riding and hunt off their atv's only.

I was pretty suprized how many deer I seen while riding this year.. sometimes they'd just stand there and look for 2 minutes. Plenty of time to shoot. You'd think the noise would scare em' off long before you were close by..

I bowhunted my 2x2 blacktail on thanksgiving, It was my first buck! I normally take does because they're easier to hunt, and I love venison so much I shoot the first deer I see, this year I saw the 2x2.

Congrats on your first buck LDJ! I don't care much for the taste of venison food, so it's pretty easy holding out for the "big boy" to pass by.

If you don't like deer meat too much I hear lot's of people buy half a pig and mix it in to make the hamburger. Supposed to be pretty tasty. Not much you can do for the steak and stew beef if you don't like it though.

The key with venison, is to eliminate all the fat & bone before cooking. It's the fat & marrow in the bone that gives it the wild taste. It also makes great jerky.

Heres what to do for good eating deer meat. Field dress and get to process or home if you do it yourself as soon as possible ( don't ride it around showing everyone all day) . Put a little beef fat in the burger. We eat deer year round and I guarantee you if you eat some that my wife cooks you can't tell the difference between deer and good beef, we have fooled a bunch of people that would'nt eat deer meat normally (if they only knew it ). I went hunting in Mcdowel and another county ( bow hunting only)last year near Bluefield , saw one good buck while on my four wheeler but the full moon really hurt the hunting . Hopefully I can get back up next year ,had planned on going back this year but some things came up that prevented that. Really loved the senic views from the mountain tops but the climbs up to the hunting areas were really hard. Hope everyone got the big one they were after.
