Did you check the condition of your front sprocket? I don't know how people overlook this as often as they do, but if the sprockets go too long without being replaced the teeth will break off, and cause the chain to slip over them. I never heard axle bearings make popping noises, or any other kind of bearings for that matter. Sometimes the swingarm bearings will make a creaking sound when they wear out, but they have to get really bad to do that. Actually, that noise is caused when the bearings are completely gone, and the swingarm is just riding on the pivot with nothing in between.

Your sprockets may be "shark toothed" as well, which means they are hooked and dont point straight out like they should. My cousins blaster does the same thing.

Jack your quad up and see if the swingarm or axle wiggle at all. If they do, you blew a bearing. My quad was making the same noise yours was, and it was because of a blew axle bearing. I let it go to long and the bearing wore away at the axle carrier. It makes that popping noise because the chain isnt riding on the sprokets flush because the axle can wiggle back and forth. Also, because I let that bearing go to long, I blew the swingarm bearing beacause of the extra wear and tear. later.
