Wolverine Shifting
At times, my Wolverine has a hard time upshifting to the next gear. This issue usually happens when going from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to third. Once the machine has been ridden a bit(a few hundred feet) and warmed up, the problem goes away. I have a feeling once the gearbox and oil warm up, things work properly.
Will adjusting the clutch freeplay hellp this issue at all?

Mine does the same thing (2004). I don't think it is anything to worry about. I have tried to adjust the clutch free play and it didn't help. Once you ride it a few hundred feet it is fine. I am more concerned about the rattles in the engine when it is warm but have been told it is normal for an air cooled Yamaha engine. Adjusting the valve clearance doesn't help. The dealer told me that sometimes the clutch will rattle. Haven't found the source yet.

Thanks. I've got to replace the right hand mud flap as I put a large stick through it a couple of weekends ago!
I'm running 10w-40 Amsoil (full synthetic).
Took the Wolvey out for a short ride tonight. Shifted fine from 1st to 2nd, then didn't want to shift into third! After running for a short while the shifting smothed out. Just a quirk.

If I remember correctly I used truck flaps purchased from Advanced Auto. They do keep alot of mud off your boots.
I was po'ed that Yamaha stopped selling the overfenders for the Wolverine. I know that Moose makes a some but they need to be trimmed down some. The Yamaha flaps looked just right.
The shifting issue does seem to get worse in colder temps.
Also, go ahead and check the free play on the clutch. I set mine when it was fairly new and am planning on doing it again now that I have some hours on it (70).

Sorry to bump an old thread guys....
I went riding Friday. High temp was about 45F. In the morning, it was probably in the upper 30's/low 40's. I'm running Castrol motorcycle oil, 10w-40...NON synthetic. I just changed the oil last week, this was my first ride with a fresh oil change and new filter.
Shifting was OK, but I had a heck of a time getting the machine to shift out of reverse in the morning; even after it was warmed up. I had a back up a few times, but it would not shift out of reverse when I wanted it to. Usually, backing up another few feet solved the problem. In the afternoon, I had no problems at all. Shifting out of reverse happened as it was supposed to.
I'm going to adjust the free play tomorrow. I'm open to any suggestions though.

One thing it could be is if you are using the wrong weight oil for winter weather. The oil is so thick that the clutch is dragging/sticking. That would explain why the problem goes away after the motor heats the oil. Just an idea.
-- I forgot to keep reading.. I just noticed that you already tried oil.
