Just picked up a like new 05 yfz only took it for a quick spin because it was dark but loved it. however when i picked it up the battery was dead (they said that they left the ignition on) when i got home i gave it a push start and it was running a little rough, will a fully charged battery fix this ( all the computer stuff) and also after my quick spin the exhaust was red hot near the engine, is this something i should be worried about? thanx for any help

2) The battery needs a trickle charge with a (you guessed it) trickle charger. Preferrably one that is for that battery (a 13 volt I believe). When not in use, always turn the KEY off. Even when shutting it off while on a riding trip. The ignition switch will cause the battery to slowly drain if it is left in the "on" position, even if you use the other switch to turn off the quad.
3) Always ride with the headlights on. This will ensure that the charging system is always engaged. Otherwise the fan may run directly off of the battery.
4) Mine is an 04', and I am still on the original battery. I just try to keep it in the upper RPMs when riding, and always ride with the lights on. I think its only gone dead on me once in over 2 years, and thats because it sat for over 3 months!

2fun gave you all the right answers. I doubt the battery had anything to do with the quad runnnig rough once it was started. I have had to pop start these before due to dead battery and have not had that problem. There are a ton of things that could make it run rough, what have you tried to rule out?

RIde it around at a slow pace for a few minutes and turn off the kill switch only. My fan runs for a minute or so on a hot day doing this. If you are riding at a good pace, the radiator gets enough air that the fan doesn't have to turn on. For example, I have gotten stuck behind slower moving utes on the trail, and I hear the fan kick on after just a few minutes of putting along. I have ridden the same section of trail the same day at my own, faster pace and the fan never kicks on. Oh, by the way, if your fan starts to run all the time, make sure your rad isn't plugged with mud and stuff.
