Need Help: Thinking of purchasing a 97 Wolverine
#1
I am looking at a 97 Wolverine 350. It is very nice and has many upgrades. The quad has a 435 engine kit on it. The quad is just what I want. It has 2 and 4 wheel drive along with a lot of other things. The question I have is, if the engine ever breaks (the cylinder wall gets scratched for some reason or another) can the engine be bored out or fixed or do I have to purchase a whole new engine b/c the quad has already been bored out to the max, which is 435? I'm not even sure if 435 is the max it can be bored out this is just what I've been told. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Im not sure how big it can be bored, buy you can buy a sleeve that right right inside the hole along with a new piston and itll be like new. Alot of banshee owners do this.

So, in other words, if I buy this quad and the engine breaks it can be fixed without replacing the whole motor even though it has the 435 kit? I'm pretty sure that is what you are saying, but I just want to make sure. Thanks.

In answer to your question. Yes. If the motor does ever go south just start over with a new sleeve and standard size piston. I would definately jump on the older wolverine. The new ones have that lame rubber band drive. I still dont know why yamaha had to ruin such a good machine. They just wanted to increase sales and go after more newbie riders so they gave it a raptor style bodywork, rubber-band drive, and floorboards.

Thanks for the info. One last question. This quad does have high compression and it was built to go. Is there such a thing a maximum size sleeve? Hypothetically, if this quad have the biggest sleeve possible, does that change the situation at all, would I have to get a new motor if it has the biggest possible sleeve? Or are sleeves all different sizes no matter what your situation is?

Actually, you have room for one more bore on the 435, the next size up is the 446 kit, but after that, you would have to resleeve to get back to the 435. Four Stroke Tech mostly does the 446 now, they didn't have enough business on the 435, and decided to only have the 446. They used to have a 500 kit, but that was pretty insane, and it was a race type motor, and not as long lived as the smaller kits.

95Wolv is right on the money.
I started out with the 435 and have since had the last cut possible on my present sleeve, which did take it out to 446.
I believe there were indeed reliability issues with the 500cc motor, as far as a trail motor goes.
