2004 Raptor 350 Starter?

starter question
I'm trying to rebuild a 2005 350 Raptor engine for my son, and when I had the magneto pulled, the service guy found a split in the case where the rod for the starter motor gear fits in. I had an "expert" weld the cracks (I could have done better). I got the case back togeter, and the put the starter motor back in. It appears that the gear that the starter is meshed with, must have put an awful lot of strain on the rod that holds the gear in place, causing the "socket" (for lack of a better word) to crack. I'm more used to car starters, where the gear retracts back into the starter when the key is released. It looks like the starter motor on the ATV is going to be turning, all the time the engine is running. Is that right, or do the gears stop turning after the engine starts? Call me stupid!
