Default yfz 450 overheating light comming on HELP!!!!

Ok here's the problem, I start my bike (it’s hard to turn over) and let it idle for a while and then I take it for a quick spin around the block. Half way around the red light comes on to let me know that the engine is to hot. So I turn it off and let it sit until the light goes off, then when I start it and drive for like two feet the light comes back on. I am not to sure how long this has bean going on, I just bought the bike and found out that the red light hade bean disconnected from its little socket so I can only pursume that this was happening to the guy before me. O yeh and the fan never comes on so I don’t think that the bike is actually overheating. What could the problem be? And how much damage could be done if this has beanlike this for a while? Any help would be great thanx

Are you loosing coolant through the overflow tube in the resevoir? Might have a blown head gasket, that would turn the light on.

no, there was no antifreez leaking out of the over flow, however there was a litle bit leakingout of the seal where the antifreez exits the engin. how would i know if my headgasket was blown?

Get one of those infrared thermometors and when the light comes on take a temp reading of the cylinder and the top of the radiator. The coolant always flows in to the top of rad and out at the bottom. My guess is there is a bad sending unit for the warning light. My raptor 700 has to run a quite awhile for the fan to come on.
